As the sun set over the Sydney Opera House on 10 December, the Southern Hemisphere’s favourite folk/pop artist Brooke Fraser graced the stage for a night that felt more like a warm embrace than a concert. The rain, which had threatened all afternoon, held off, leaving the iconic steps buzzing with joy and anticipation. Fraser’s return to the stage, accompanied by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, was nothing short of a masterclass in artistry and authenticity.

The evening opened with New Zealand’s Georgia Lines, whose ethereal voice set the perfect tone for what was to come. Her performance was a beautiful introduction, offering a taste of the raw talent that flows so effortlessly from across the Tasman. As Lines concluded, the Opera House’s architectural beauty, framed by a palette of soft pinks and oranges from the setting sun, created a serene backdrop for Fraser’s entrance.

Dressed in a striking red outfit that mirrored the vibrancy of her spirit, Brooke Fraser (also hailing from Aotearoa) took to the stage to thunderous applause. From the very first note of “Better”, it was clear this wasn’t just another show—it was something truly special. Her voice, as pure and powerful as ever, resonated through the open skies, intertwining seamlessly with the lush arrangements of the orchestra. The addition of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra elevated the experience to another level. Their lush, expansive arrangements added depth and grandeur to Fraser’s already stunning compositions.

The setlist was a carefully curated journey through Fraser’s discography, weaving together fan favourites and deeply personal tracks. She moved the crowd to tears of joy, sorrow, and nostalgia with songs like “Kings & Queens”, revisited cherished classics like “Albertine” and “Arithmetic”, and offered an intimate glimpse into her life with unreleased songs about motherhood and the complexities of “mum guilt”. These new tracks were tender and reflective, painting a raw and relatable portrait of her current season. Her authenticity is part of what makes her so beloved—especially in how she shares her faith so openly. It was inspiring to see such a strong turnout for an artist who so shamelessly loves the Lord. If you’re looking for Brooke’s explicitly Christian music, you’ll find it under her new name “Brooke Ligertwood”.

She brought many of her talented friends up on stage that night but one of the night’s standout moments was her duet with Australian artist Aodhan King on “Who Are We Fooling?”. The synergy between the two artists was electric, their harmonies soaring effortlessly and filling the space with a sense of unity and shared purpose. It was an intimate yet monumental moment, showcasing Fraser’s gift for collaboration and her ability to bring out the best in those around her.

Songs like “St. Petersburg” and “Magical Machine” highlighted Fraser’s versatility as an artist. Between songs, Fraser’s witty and down-to-earth banter made the night feel refreshingly personal. Her stories, jokes, and anecdotes had the audience in stitches, fostering an atmosphere that felt less like a formal concert and more like an intimate gathering of old friends. She shared reflections on life, love, and the creative process, offering glimpses into the heart behind the music. It was this human-ness—her ability to chat and laugh with the crowd—that reminded us why she remains one of the most cherished artists in the industry.

As the night came to an unexpected close due to the venue’s noise curfew, Fraser’s final song, “Shadowfeet”, left the audience both elated and yearning for more. Her performance was a testament to her enduring talent and unparalleled ability to connect with listeners on a deeply personal level.

Brooke Fraser’s show at the Sydney Opera House was more than just a performance; it was a reminder of the beauty found in vulnerability and authenticity. From breathtaking orchestral arrangements to heartfelt storytelling, Fraser created a night that will linger in the hearts of everyone who attended. It was a gift—a moment of reprieve in a busy world—and a beautiful testament to why we gather to experience live music in the first place.

Thank you Brooke.
