From her early days in an 8th-grade talent show to becoming a powerful voice in the Gospel Neo-Soul genre, Avery Doreen’s musical journey is a reflection of her faith and growth as an artist. Her sound combines influences from Jazz, Alternative RnB/Funk, Soul, and Gospel. Avery’s decision to brand her sound as Gospel Neo-Soul comes from years of developing her voice and sound. We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Avery Doreen, our For The Glory Artist of the Month for February, about her faith, motherhood, and the journey that has led her to where she is today.

Avery began her musical journey at a young age with vocal lessons and competitions, but it wasn’t until she came to Christ at 19 that she found a more meaningful outlet for her gift. Joining her church’s worship team gave her an outlet beyond performance. The transition wasn’t easy, as she struggled with the attention that reminded her of her competition days, often feeling the desire to hide in the background. But over time, she learned to look beyond the spotlight and recognized how her gift was impacting others through their testimonies.
With encouragement from friends at church, she began what she claims as “the awkward but fulfilling journey of songwriting” in 2020, discovering a new passion for creating music that reflects her personal conversations and triumphs with the Lord. While she continues to lead worship and write congregational songs for her church, Avery has also branched out into her own artistry to make music that blends personal lyrics with the sounds she loves, creating a beautiful and unique expression of her faith.
Avery sees Zechariah 4:10 as a reminder that every journey has a starting point, no matter how awkward. Moving from vocal competitions to leading worship and eventually songwriting came with challenges but this verse encouraged her to embrace new beginnings rather than shy away from them.
“Not knowing how to do something is often the thing that prevents people from fulfilling their purpose. It’s so easy to hide in the background instead of stepping out in faith but this verse is such an important reminder that the Lord rejoices to see the process begin”
She reflects on the deeper Biblical context, explaining how the verse references the rebuilding of the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile. “Ezra 3:10, and Haggai 2:3 set the scene that those who had seen the previous Temple were upset because the new one was not as glorious. Ezra 4-6 also describe how much resistance His people faced, resulting in a period of time where the rebuilding had stopped.”
“This story has been so close to my heart for years now because it shows just how complicated it can be to accomplish a task assigned by the Lord, but that by doing it anyway, just BEGINNING the work, pleases the Lord and provides the skills, boldness, and resources necessary to complete it. JUST START. Do not despise these new beginnings for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin!”

In addition to being a singer/songwriter, Avery is also a photographer. These creative outlets have helped in expressing herself fully. Developing her identity both sonically and visually has been huge for her. Avery emphasizes the importance of seeking the purest expression of her message rather than simply piecing together lyrics. By spending time with the Lord and finding refuge in His presence, she is able to write songs that invite others into the same place of peace and connection.
“Prayer is inseparable from songwriting if you truly want to be an extension of the Lord’s love for His people and help them experience freedom.”
Moving from Ontario (Canada) to Florida shifted her focus away from music as she navigated marriage, motherhood, and the immigration process. While she initially expected music to play a bigger role after connecting with artists like TJ Carrol, BURKS, and Andrew Paul, she found something even more meaningful: deep, family-like relationships. Avery believes that what matters most to the Lord is community over career moves.
“Those guys are family to us and Uncles to our daughter and I believe that that’s more important to the Lord than just using each other for career moves. “
This shift has also shaped how she balances family life with music. With the support of her husband, she is able to focus on her home without the pressure of making music a career. While she continues to lead worship once a month, she isn’t pushing herself to create at this season in her life. Avery recognizes that being a stay-at-home wife/mother isn’t for everyone but it’s something she’s passionate about, especially the health of her home. “I didn’t want to feel like motherhood was taking something away from me so I’ve chosen not to put that expectation on myself to HAVE to do anything else.” When the Lord calls her back to songwriting she knows it will become part of the family dynamic and not something separate, especially since she and her husband create from their home.

We asked Avery which three songs tend to lift her spirit and draw her closer to God, and she answered:
Goodness of God by Cece Winans - “which got me through the end of my pregnancy and came on in the hospital at the exact moment my daughter was born”
While Avery is trusting the Lord’s timing for what comes next in her music journey, what she knows for sure is she’s going to continue writing for her church’s worship team, Space Coast Worship, and being a good steward of the relationships the Lord has blessed her with. She believes she’ll return soon with new songs that reflect this season of life, exploring themes like motherhood, wavering faith, and new beginnings. One project she’s excited about is a song she and her husband worked on together, set to release on his new Trillmatik album in March 2025. While she isn’t pushing herself to create right now, she remains open to when the Lord calls her back to songwriting.
Avery Doreen’s story is one of faith, obedience, and trusting in God’s plan. From stepping into worship leading to finding her own artistic voice, she has learned to embrace each new beginning, even when it feels awkward or uncertain. Whether through music, photography, or simply being present in her family’s life, her creativity is an offering of worship, always pointing back to the One who started it all.
